Change is a given, team performance is not. Teams are expected to perform, be innovative and be effective, whilst the business environment around them is subject to upheaval.

What remains stable; is what drives us, what gets us up in the morning and gets us to commit. Our character strengths are the beacon that helps us navigate the uncertainty. They shine the light on what we enjoy doing and give us the connection with others when we recognise their drivers too. It not only motivates us but helps us motivate others. Exponential Leaders

We live in a world that is constantly shifting. If it is not remote working clashing with the expectation to work on site, it is trying to keep the cohesion in your team and yet stay focussed. As a leader you are expected to be responsible, accountable, and yet flexible.

A team is like a living organism, as a unit it breathes culture, rejects intrusion and connects internally, and loses its cohesion when being forced apart. You need to be able to steer a team to perform as one, have focus and above all be resilient so they can stay the course. Keeping steady is not easy. Having a well-designed team can make the difference. Each team needs its own heart, lungs, muscles, and immune system. Who is yours? Identifying the right person for the right role is not merely a task to match capabilities. We now know that knowledge can be gained, skills learned but above all a well-matched team is a recipe for success. After all performance depends on who we are, not only on what we can do.

You are responsible for this; your team’s unity, their strength their ability to stay resilient and perform. You need to lead through them. How well do you know your team? Do you know what makes them truly resilient? Is their behaviour an outcome you can foresee?

It starts with your own introspection. A recent study found that when leaders do the comfortable thing, the tick box exercise, the training that makes you feel good about your strengths and pats you on the back; the long term benefits to both the individual and the organisation is negative.

We learn in upheaval; we find resiliency adversity we grow by confronting the uncomfortable truths. When last did you take a long hard look at yourself, how you did things and were you vulnerable enough to say, “Can you help me”?

As leaders we grow in places of flux. When others see only problems we sift through and find the opportunities. When others see the storm we create the eye and find the peace so our people can be their best selves. When we struggle to find our footing those around us suffer with us, but when we regain it, they grow and find their resilience too. We need to set an example but also be willing to be confronted with where we need help. No one is perfect. Leaders recognise this and build teams that are stronger together. Leaders know that mere skills and capabilities do not turn a team into a powerhouse, the people in a team do.
